Kandhamal: Five held with 102-kg ganja in ‘Press’ vehicle

Phulbani: Police seized a car having ‘press’ tag on its number plate and arrested five ganja traders Wednesday afternoon from near Sunamudi bridge of Salaguda area under Gochhapada police limits in Kandhamal district. The smugglers were reportedly smuggling the consignment to Chhattisgarh.

This comes in the wake of the district police stepping up the routine patrol in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak and imposition of shutdowns that restricts vehicles to ply on roads without adequate pass. Despite these pro-active measures, the cannabis traders in Kandhamal adopt novel ways to carry out their illegal activities.

102kg of ganja, cash of Rs 1,47,000, four mobile phones and a boom were seized from them. The arrested have been identified as Krishna Chauhan, Arjun Yadav, Paramanand Yadav, Stephen Tigo all from Chhattisgarh and Adam Digal from Salaguda area in the district.

The seized cannabis was being smuggled from Gochhapada to Chhattisgarh passing through Kantamal area of Boudh district. Local police have filed a case (No.-47/20) in this connection and started investigation, Sadar SDPO Mahendranath Murmu informed.
