Bhubaneswar, Dec 9: Debutants Kishore Club won both their Pool C matches and became the first team to enter the quarterfinals of the Limka Memorial Basketball Tournament at the Unit-I Basketball Complex here Wednesday.
Kishore Club got the better of Government Sports Hostel (GSH) 63-54 in their last league match. Earlier they had defeated Yuva Basketball Club 72-48.
Meanwhile, Cuttack-based Samant Chandra Sekhar Club (SSCC) started their campaign on a winning note. They edged out SOA University 37-35 in a thrilling Pool D game.
Contrasting wins
Sunrise Club and Rising Students Club registered contrasting victories in their respective matches of the FAO First Division Super League at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Wednesday.
Sunrise blanked Independent Club 2-0 in the first match. The goals were scored by Soosai Raj M (seventh) and Sk. Zahid (28th).
The second match was a keenly-contested affair in which Rising Students pipped Bidanasi Club by a solitary goal. Antarjami Nayak scored the winning goal, a minute into the second half.
Thursday’s matches: Radha Raman Club vs Jay Durga Club (1.00pm); Rising Star Club vs SAI-STC (3.00pm).
Football tourney
Unit-VI Athletic Association will organise the IXth Biju Patnaik Gold Cup football tournament at the Unit-VI High School Ground here December 17-22, informed organising committee chairman Padmanav Behera in a press conference here Wednesday.
Ten teams will participate in this 10-day tournament. They are Phulbani, Sundargarh, Nayagarh , Bolangir, Keonjhar, Balasore (all sports hostel teams), SAI Centre (Sunabeda), United Football Club (Cuttack), KISS and Sainik Schools. “Based on the performance in the tournament, few junior players will be selected for the Tata Football Academy,” informed Padmanav.
