Bhubaneswar, Nov 3: The Scheduled Castes cell of Biju Janata Dal Friday alleged that Special Operations Group (SOG) jawans were indeed involved in the rape of a minor girl in Kunduli recently. They demanded a fresh probe of the incident.
“Our panel has visited the spot, made inquiries regarding the incident and submitted a report to the Chief Minister. We maintain that SOG jawans committed this crime and have sought a high-level probe of the incident,” convenor of the cell Bishnu Das told reporters. He, however, made a U-turn on the statement later and said he had only appealed to the CM to order an impartial probe.
At the press meet Das said that he would “urge the Chief Minister that instead of the Crime Branch team, the newly-appointed Crime Branch ADG Santosh Upadhyay should personally investigate the matter”. Das said the family of the victim was alleging that instead of nabbing the real suspects, the police were harassing them. He demanded adequate protection for the victim and her family.
The minor girl had been gang-raped in a forest near Sorisapadar village near Kunduli in Koraput district recently. She was returning home from school when she was assaulted. She claimed that she was overpowered by four persons in combat fatigues, taken into the forest and raped. The police, however, has maintained that it has not been able to establish the involvement of any security force personnel or Maoist in the incident.
