Lack of beds hit healthcare services at SCB Medical College

Cuttack: Famed SCB Medical College and Hospital of Cuttack has been hit by lack of adequate beds for patients affecting the healthcare services here seriously, patients have alleged.

Thousands of patients who depend on SCB for treatment have been left in the lurch due to the indifferent attitude of the hospital authorities who have shown little interest in increasing the number of beds, they accused.

According to hospital data, as many as 8,000 patients from different places of the state come here for treatment while 4,000 get admitted.

With the severe shortage of beds, patients can be seen lying on the verandah of the wards awaiting treatment even though this increases the risk of getting an infection. A source in the hospital suggested that the hospital has been facing an acute shortage of beds, especially in skin, gynecology and surgery wards.

Medical superintendent CBK Mohanty said, “As per the Supreme Court guidelines, we must provide treatment to whoever comes to the hospital. Given the extremely high number of patients coming here, some of them struggle to find beds. That said, we strive hard to attend to each and every patient coming to the hospital.”

Lack of beds, however, has been a cause of concern for the hospital administration and steps will be taken to add more beds, he added.
