Puri, Dec 8: Hundreds of lawyers of Puri Bar Association Monday gheraoed the district collector office and staged a road blockade for several hours demanding stern action against the tehsil employees for attacking a lawyer.
The lawyer was recently beaten up when he protested to oblige their illegal money demand.
Additional district magistrate Udhab Charan Majhi and sub-collector Madhusudan Das appealed to the lawyers to call off their strike and restore normalcy but the agitating lawyers resolved to continue the strike till the district magistrate addresses their demand.
Biranchi Das, a lawyer, was assaulted by the Puri Sadar tehsil office employees Wednesday when he protested illegal demand of money for issuing a no objection certificate on land status. He sustained fracture on his right arm with bleeding injury.
The striking lawyers decided to continue to boycott the work in all the courts till the issue is suitably resolved. They also demanded legal action against the employees who had assaulted the lawyer and to stop extortion of litigants by the tehsil staff and initiation of criminal cases against the employees who had attacked the lawyer.
