Brussels: Roger Federer who played 15 tournaments in 2017, has indicated that he may cut down on the number of events in 2018 just to stay fresh for the Grand Slams. He also asserted that his main focus would be the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open and that the French Open may not be a part of his scheme in the ensuing season.
“I will be 37 when the season gets under way in 2018. So I need to be careful regarding my body as I was in 2017,” Federer was quoted as saying by a section of the media here Monday.
“It’s not that I am planning retirement. The fact, however is I will play tournaments which suits my body and gives me enough time to recover between matches. As you grow old, the recovery period is important as it doesn’t happen as quickly as it does when you are say… 25, 28.”
Federer ended 2017 at No.2 in the ATP rankings with a 52-5 win loss record. “That to me is pretty good, considering the point of my career, I am in,” stated the Swiss. “I probably surprised a lot of people by winning two Grand Slam titles (Australian Open and Wimbledon), but it did not surprise me. I still retain that passion to play well, to win,” he added.
The Swiss, however, is well aware that 2018 will be tougher than this year. With the likes of Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray, all expected back in the circuit, the top will be quite crowded. “Yes, there is no illusion about the challenges about to develop,” Federer said. “But as a player, you have got to be ready for all situations and give your best always. To be frank, winning is important, but at this stage of my career it is important for me to stay fit and enjoy my tennis.”
