Barang, Oct 25: A liquor trader was hacked to death by miscreants at Madhupur under Barang police limits here Friday.
The victim was identified as Govind Swain (35) alias Kalia of Deuli, who ran a liquor shop near a petrol pump at Madhupur and also owned a brick kiln under at Deuli.
Police registered a case of murder as per a complaint lodged by his father, Bhashkar Swain, and detained six persons—Gajendra Sahu, Kanha Sahu, Basua Sahu, Biju Sahu, Tulu Pradhan and Kalia Sahu—of Madhupur in connection with the murder.
The victim’s scooter, three raw bombs, a few soda bottles and snacks packets were recovered from the spot. He was hacked with a sharp-edged weapon near a school at Madhupur on his way back from his liquor shop, said police. A few villagers spotted Kalia’s scooter lying abandoned near the school around 11.30 pm. They latter found Kalia lying in a pool of blood in a nearby pit, said police.
On being informed, Kalia’s family members and Barang police in-charge Sanjay Patnaik brought a profusely bleeding Kalia to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. However, he died on the way. Kalia’s body bore deep wounds on its head, chest and back, said police.
His father, meanwhile, alleged that Pradip Sahu of Madhupur and some of his friends had an enmity with Kalia. Pradip and his friends used to pick quarrels with Kalia whenever they failed to pay money for liquor, he said.
“Pradip and his friends intercepted Kalia and hacked him to death. They had also taken away Rs 1 lakh from him. The attackers were sure that Kalia had done good business at the liquor shop on the fateful day. He was returning home with at least Rs 1 lakh from the shop,” said Bhashkar Swain. He also said an employee of the liquor shop, who is a distant relative of Pradip’s, might have provided important information on Kalia’s business of the day.
