Manchester: Mohammed Shami (4/16) continued his brilliance show with the ball as India crushed West Indies by 125 runs in their World Cup encounter at the Old Trafford here, Thursday. The win took India to 11 points from six games and they are now only a point away from the semifinal berth. Chasing a victory target of 269, the Windies were never in the game and were bowled out for a paltry 143 in just 34.2 overs.

Shami was well-supported by Jasprit Bumrah (2/9) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/39) while Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya took one wicket apiece to seal West Indies’ fate. The loss eliminated whatever chances the two-time former champions had for a possible last four berth.

Shami, Bumrah on fire as West Indies crumble

Manchester:  India were virtually assured of a semifinal berth with West Indies staring down the barrel at 124 for nine after the end of 30 overs. The Indian bowlers once more came to the party as West Indies wickets fell in a heap. Mohammed Shami (3/16) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/9) were instrumental for the West Indian collapse. They were well backed up by Yuzvendra Chahal (2/26) and Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya who picked up one wicket apiece.

India ride on Dhoni, Pandya knocks to post fighting total

Manchester: Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s (56 n o, 61b, 3×4, 2×6) timely half century and a fiery knock by Hardik Pandya (46, 38b, 5×4) helped India post a decent 268 for seven at the end of their allotted 50 overs against the West Indies. Earlier skipper Virat Kohli (72, 82b, 8×4) looked set for a century but was dismissed by his West Indian counterpart Jason Holder (2/33). Manchester: India will aim to shrug off the scare against Afghanistan as they face West Indies in the 2019 ICC World Cup at Old Trafford here, Thursday.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat first.

“We have two wrist-spinners, and hopefullly a few rough patches for them to exploit. I think shot-selection and bit more application when they are set (for the team). Same team,” said Kohli.

“We would have liked to have bowled too, but if the pitch will do anything, it will probably be first up. Two changes for us: Sunil Ambris and Fabian Allen are in, for Ashley Nurse and Evin Lewis,” said Windies captain Jason Holder.
