Rupsa: In a clear case of carelessness on the part of a food supply agency, a tail of a house lizard was found stuck in a food packet meant for kids, expectant and lactating women at Pegarpada Anganwadi centre under Basta block in Balasore district Tuesday.
The incident has shocked many people in the district, who flayed the agency. The child development project officer (CDPO) has been informed.
Reports said the Anganwadi workers had distributed groundnut biscuits, sooji, sugar, chickpea flour and edible oil to some expectant and lactating women. Mahendra Behera, a villager, had brought some food stuff for his pregnant wife from the Anganwadi worker. To his shock, he found a tail of a house lizard stuck in a groundnut biscuit packed in polythene.
He drew the attention of the villagers to the matter and later took the packet to the Anganwadi centre and showed it to the CDPO too.
Locals alleged that such unhygienic food stuff will pose health hazards to children and women while the food supply agency is too careless to ensure proper preparation and packing of ready-to-eat food.
Anganwadi worker Gitanjali Praharaj said Sidheswar SHG of Remuna was recently given contract to supply food stuff. After this allegation, the higher authorities were informed, she added.
