Sinapali: At a time when forests are under constant threat of encroachment and urbanization, locals of Nagajhar village under this block in Nuapada district have dedicated 25 years of their life to protect a 600-acre forest near this village.
The efforts of the locals are praiseworthy considering the fact that the government is failing to protect the natural resources. The villagers are a leading example of community-based forest conservation. Their efforts prove that locals can effectively manage their own natural resources without government aid.
What is special about it is the area where a thick lush green forest stands now was once a barren land. And, it is home to many animals.
Nagajhar is a small village where 40-50 tribal families live. They mostly live on forest produce. However, illegal activities of wood mafia used to pose a threat to their living and source of food and income.
That’s when a tribal, Buturam Ghibhela, decided to protect the forest with the help of his family members 35 years back. Inspired by Buturam, locals also came forward and formed a forest protection committee. With the help of forest officials, they planted many trees in the area.
“Forest is our source of food and income for us and our children. There is no rain due to deforestation. Drought situation arises during summer. So, I decided to take a step to protect our natural resource,” says Buturam.
The locals divide themselves into two groups and stand guard to the forest in two shifts of day and night throughout the year. The tribals have planted several types of valuable trees including sal, teak, mahua, bamboo and mahogany. They also plant new trees every year and urge their neighbouring villages to take part in the noble deed. Needless to say, the villagers have won several accolades and prizes for their contribution to the green cause.
The Orissa Forest and Environment Department had provided Rs 10,000 to the villagers in 2009 and Nuapada district forest division Rs 10,000 in 2008.
When contacted, Sinapali ranger Murari Prasad Panda hailed the efforts of the locals and promised of help any time. PNN
