New Delhi: The Biju Janata Dal members of Parliament have now been able to successfully introduce seven private members’ Bills in the Lok Sabha with the support of the majority of the members of the Lower House.
The introductions were accepted by the Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai Friday.
The private members’ Bills were introduced by three BJD MPs. Balasore MP Rabindra Kumar Jena introduced four private members’ Bills, Bolangir MP Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo two and Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab one. Among the Bills, the High Court of Orissa (Establishment of a Permanent Bench at Balasore) Bill, 2017, introduced by Jena, sought the establishment of a permanent bench of High Court in Balasore.
Talking to Orissa POST, the parliamentarian while explaining the need of the legislation said, “There are around 25 lakh people in Balasore, while the northern districts comprise over 1 crore population. Why do all of these people have to come to Cuttack for High Court related matters? There are around 1.7 lakh cases already pending in the High Court.”
Speaking on the Indian Diaspora and Education Infrastructure (Brain Drain Cess) Bill, 2017, the Balasore MP said, “There is a need to create better infrastructure for the students. We are not able to provide quality innovation centres and because of that people are going out of the country. We need to create better infrastructure here, so that they stay here and work for the development of the country.”
Bolangir MP Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, who Introduced Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Amendment Bill, 2017, told this newspaper that there is a need to enhance the penalty for rape and sexual offences against the children which the private members’ Bill as introduced by him addresses.
