Bhubaneswar, May 8: Orissa were crowned champions at the National Cricket Championships for the visually-impaired for the first time after defeating Gujarat in a nail-biting final at Hyderabad, Sunday.
Opting to bat, Gujarat notched up 53/7 after the game was reduced to five overs due to heavy rain. Lalprasad Pradhan bagged two wickets for Orissa.
In response, Orissa sealed the victory in the final delivery of the game. Man of the final Sukhram Majhi (34) led the run chase. Pankaj Bhue was adjudged man of the series following his wonderful all-round performances throughout the tournament.
Rayagada win
Rayagada scripted a comprehensive 143-run win over Phulbani in a lop-sided encounter of the Inter-District women’s cricket tournament at the Ravenshaw Ground-I in Cuttack, Sunday.

(At Ravenshaw Ground-I): Rayagada 173 (Satyabhama Sabar 46; Simarani Behera 3/56) beat Phulbani 30 (Swarnalata Jakesika 4/6) by 143 runs.
(At Ravenshaw Ground-II): Sundargarh 188 for 5 (Rupashree Tripathy 65) beat Nayagarh 80 for 6 (Rupashree Tripathy 3/7) by 58 runs (D/L method).
(At BOSE Ground): Malkangiri 96 (Laxmi Kabasi 44; Rakhi Soren 4/11) lost to Sonepur 98 for 8 (Malati Majumdar 2/7) by two wickets.
Rakesh advances
FM Rakesh Kumar Jena of Orissa jumped to joint second spot after playing out a draw with FM Rajdeep Sarkar in his sixth round match in the open event of the Asian Junior Chess Championships at New Delhi, Sunday. Rakesh is tied with five others on 4.5 points each.
Orissa finish 4th
Orissa ended up their campaign in the fourth position in the Sixth National Junior Women’s Hockey Championship (A Division) after losing their third- fourth play-off match to Jharkhand 3-1.
Cricket tourney
The Paramount Sporting Club will organise the Aurobinda Memorial Paramount Cup U-14 T20 cricket tournament at their own ground, in BJB Nagar here May 14-19.
Football camp
The Football Association of Orissa (FAO) will conduct an AIFF ‘D’ License coaching course in Cuttack May 19-23. It is mandatory for the coaches to have the AIFF D license certificate in order to get an entry into the AFC ‘C’ license coaching programme.
