Narayanpatna, July 28: Thirty students of Podapadar Ashram School have left the hostel as panic gripped the school after death of a student of suspected malaria three days ago.
However, the block extension officer has not visited the school yet which drew flack from several quarters.
Meanwhile, a group of women health workers visited the school Tuesday and identified seven hostel inmates with malaria during a health check-up drive. The affected students identified as Bhushit Hiredika of Class-V; Ambe Manding, Kantha Nachika and Sanjeev Mandagi of Class-IV, and Jayanta Nachika, Laya Huluka, Basanti Nachika of Class-I. The students were given medicines for malaria.
This correspondent when visited the school Tuesday, found that only 85 students were present in the school. Guardians of other 30 students took them back to their villages out of fear.
According to the students, three of them have been given one mosquito net, due to which they are prone to mosquito bite at night. Moreover, the hospital’s mobile van has stopped visiting the hostel to provide treatment to the inmates since July 6.
The school authorities told the representative that since 2012, mosquito nets have not been provided to the school
inmates.
There are only three teachers in the school for 190 students. One of them has to travel six km to the local hospital on a motorcycle for treatment of an inmate student frequently. This hampers education in the school.
