Malkangiri: In a unique step forward, the Malkangiri Police are handholding surrendered Maoists and Maoist sympathisers to return to the social mainstream. The cops are enrolling them in courses run by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
In the first phase, 107 rebels who laid down their arms before the district police have been enrolled into IGNOU’s Bachelor’s Preparatory Programme (BPP). This couse is meant for educating adults who do not have the 10+2 qualification.
After qualifying the BPP, they can get enrolled in the degree programme offered by the university. The district police would bear all the expenses for the course.
“After I surrendered, the SP got me enrolled into this programme. I will study hard and hope to return to the mainstream of the society,” said Sukadeb, a surrendered Maoist now preparing for the exams.
“In future too, we shall continue offering similar training to Maoists who wish to return to the mainstream,” Malkangiri SP Jagmohan Meena said.
