Sunday, ‘Socialism’ will be tying the knot with ‘Mamata Banerjee’ and the marriage will be solemnised at Amani Kondalampatti area in Kattur, Salem.

The groom AM Socialism is the son of KA Mohan, a Communist Party of India (CPI) leader. He hails from a traditional communist family. The bride is from a Congress family and daughter of K Palaniswami and P Neelambal couple. The bride’s parents are great fans of Mamata Banerjee and so they decided to name her after the West Bengal chief minister.

Well famous and symbolic names run deep into Socialism’s family. His brothers have been named ‘Communism’ and ‘Leninism’ while his nephew is ‘Marxism’.

Both the groom’s family and the bride’s family are closely related.

Mohan, 52, is the Villupuram district secretary of the CPI. He had contested the 2016 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as a candidate of the People’s Welfare Alliance, but lost. Mohan told this agency over the telephone: “When Communism took a turn for the worse in Soviet Union people used to rebuke us. I then decided even before my marriage that I would name my children that reflect the ideology. So I named children ‘Communism’, ‘Socialism’, and ‘Leninism’. My grandson is ‘Marxism’.”

Mohand added: “These names may sound new to the outer world, but it is quite common here. Around 60 years ago, senior comrades here had such names. The names of communist countries and leaders — such as Moscow, Russia, Vietnam, Bupesh Gupta, Jeevanandham, Venmani and Czechoslovakia — were given to comrades here. My children were named similarly.”

Socialism shared with this agency the pitfalls of having such a name. “It was not rosy for me and my brothers to have these unique names during our school days. We faced a lot of humiliation and flak in our village. But when we reached college, situations changed and we were centres of attention,” Socialism said.

While ‘Socialism’ and ‘Leninism’ are into trading of anklets and silver ornaments, ‘Communism’ is a practicing lawyer.

Socialism is however happy that his would-be wife also has a name which garners a lot of attention. “I’m happy that my would-be wife is also having a peculiar name – Mamata Banerjee, named after the present Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader. Her parents are Congress supporters and hence named their daughter Mamata Banerjee, who was and still is a firebrand leader. She was with the Congress party before floating the Trinamool Congress,” ‘Socialism’ said.

The CPI Tamil Nadu state secretary R Mutharasan and deputy secretary K Subbarayan will attend the wedding.
