Kujang: Gopi Samal, a man accused of raping a minor girl in this area of Jagatsinghpur district, allegedly hanged himself Saturday.
The matter came to light after he did not come out of his room. His family broke open his room and found him hanging.
According to sources, Samal had lured a minor to a secluded place Friday and raped her. The matter became public after the victim narrated her ordeal to her family who lodged a complaint.
The rape had evoked widespread outrage and a large number of people demanded the arrest of the accused and action against him. Fearing public stigma and arrest by the police, Samal might have ended his life, said locals.
Further investigation into the matter was underway based on statements of the victim and locals. The rape survivor will be sent for medical examination and the body of the accused has been sent for autopsy, a police official said.
