Dharmasala: Police arrested a man Monday in Jajpur district for attempting to murder his wife Sunday night over dowry.
The accused, Ranjan Kumar Sahoo, 32, belongs to Panturi village of Gadamadhupur panchayat in Jenapur police limits in Dharmasala block. The victim has been identified as Subhadra Sahoo of Dhenkanal district.
Police said Ranjan and Subhadra had got married a year ago. Although most of the dowry had been paid to Ranjan’s family during the wedding, he was demanding more. He was allegedly torturing Subhadra after she refused to ask her parents for more money.
Subhadra was subjected to frequent torture by her husband as she could not pay more money. The situation turned worse Sunday night and she was attacked by her husband. Later, she was rescued by neighbours.
Subhadra lodged a complaint against her husband alleging dowry torture and murderous attack Monday morning.
Police registered a complaint against Ranjan (case No: 192/19), arrested him and presented him in court.
