Kalyansinghpur: Police Friday arrested Mandra Tiaka (28) of Birida village under Kalyansinghpur block in Rayagada district on the charge of raping his 17-year-old niece Thursday. The incident sent shockwaves in the area.
According to reports, the girl had gone near Pandrumula hill Thursday morning to clear wild shrubs from her father’s farmland. Meanwhile, Mandra appeared on the scene and raped her after dragging her to a secluded place. The accused allegedly gagged her before committing the crime after she tried to raise an alarm. He also warned to kill her if she disclosed the matter before any one. However, the girl narrated her ordeal to her aunt after returning home.
Later, the matter was brought to the notice of other villagers. The victim’s family lodged a complaint with police after discussing it at a village meeting. Acting on the complaint, police arrested the accused and produced him in court, IIC Batakrushna Mishra said. The victim was sent for medical examination.
Meanwhile, the accused denied the allegations of rape and said he and the victim were in a relationship for the last three years. PNN
