Nabarangpur: An elderly man was beaten to death by a group of people in the Khandiguda area under Nabarangpur police limits on suspicion of being a child lifter Sunday evening, police said Monday.
According to police, the elderly man, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, was seen roaming in the Khandiguda area at around 8 pm Sunday.
“Suspecting him to be a child lifter, dozens of residents from Khandiguda and nearby villages gathered and surrounded him before assaulting him severely,” an official said.
After receiving information, police from Nabarangpur reached the spot, rescued the profusely bleeding man and rushed him to the district headquarters hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
SDPO Krushnachandra Bhatra said a murder case (94/26) has been registered at Nabarangpur police station, and an investigation is underway.
He added that efforts are being made to identify and arrest those involved in the incident at the earliest.
As the deceased remains unidentified, the body has been kept at the hospital mortuary.
Police said the body will be preserved for four days, and if any claimant comes forward during this period, it will be handed over to them.
