Manchester: Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus scored twice as Manchester City hammered Liverpool 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium here Saturday with the visitors forced to play the second half down to 10 men.
Later in the day, Arsenal defeated Bournemouth 3-0 at home while Chelsea edged past Leicester City 2-1 and Tottenham thrashed Everton 3-0 in their respective away fixtures.
Liverpool’s Senegalese striker Sadio Mane was sent off in the 37th minute for a high challenge on City’s keeper Ederson. Sane racing towards a long ball forward, Ederson rushing out of his area and stooping towards the ball, the Liverpool striker’s high foot struck the keeper in the head.
Referee Jonathan Moss deemed the challenge reckless and dangerous enough to merit a straight red card and the Brazilian received eight minutes of treatment before medical staff carried him off the field.
With City already 1-0 up at that stage thanks to a Sergio Aguero goal, Gabriel Jesus doubled the lead with a header. The Brazilian tapped in his second in the 53rd minute. Leroy Sane made it 4-0 in the 77th before completing the rout in injury time with a brilliant curling left-foot finish from 25 metres into the far corner.
Danny Welbeck (sixth, 50th) struck twice while Alexandre Lacazette (27th) scored once to help Arsenal thrash Bournemouth. Alvaro Morata (41st) and N’Golo Kante (50th) scored for Chelsea before Jamie Vardy pulled one back for the Foxes through a 72nd-minute spot-kick. At Goodison Park, Harry Kane’s (28th, 46th) double and a Christian Eriksen (42nd) strike helped Spurs down Everton.
