Jajpur, Jan 15: A local court Thursday handed down a death penalty to a man after convicting him in a double murder case of 2011.

District Judge Jivan Ballav Das passed the order on Ganeshwar Mohanta after examining the statements recorded by the witnesses. The incident March 14, 2011 had rocked the district as Ganeshwar hacked a father-daughter duo of Natisahi village under Sukinda police limits in the district with a sharp-edged weapon. Police whisked away Ganeshwar to Jajpur sub-jail after pronouncement of the order.

According to the case diary, Ganeshwar hacked Dukhabandhu Mohanta (60) near a village pond and later reached the house of his daughter Kanchan Mohanta (40) and killed her in a similar fashion and fled the scene.

Both the victims died on the spot.  The matter came to fore after Dukhabandu’s son Jayadev lodged a complaint in Sukinda police station.

Police registered a case and were on the lookout for Ganeshwar. After hiding for 12-days, he surrendered in Jajpur Road police station.
