Man held for raping differently-abled

Lanjigarh: A man working with a trust has been accused of raping a disabled girl and impregnating her in Sahajpada village of Kalahandi district.

The accused Rohidas Harijan works as a field supervisor. The matter came out after the victim and her parents (also differently-abled ) lodged a complaint with Bijepur police.

Sources said the trust has been undertaking development projects in remote villages in the area for some years. It has engaged many youths for its development works.

Rohidas was one of them and he met the victim while he was working as field supervisor of Sahajapada and the neighbouring villages of Dakoriguda and Sindhibhata. He lured the girl into a relationship promising marriage, the police said.

The villagers came to know of the relationship after the victim became pregnant. The girl belongs to a poor family. The girl’s father is deaf while her mother is mentally ill. The girl is affected by polio.

Police said Rohidas refused to marry the girl and threatened her family. Left with no option, the victim approached a landlord of the village, Gopabandhu Sahu, who helped them register a complaint with the police.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case and detained Rohidas. Kesinga SDPO Gupteswar Bhoi said he was looking into the matter with the Bijepur IIC and will take action.
