Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate police officials recently arrested two persons for impersonating as cops and cheating job seekers on the pretext of providing them opportunities with Orissa police.
Police identified the miscreants as Priya Ranjan Baral and Bijaynanda Lakra.
Interestingly, Baral was earlier arrested by Khandagiri police in April for impersonating himself as a Research & Analysis Wing (RAW) official. Sources said he had even introduced himself to commissionerate police officials as a RAW official.
“Baral had reportedly told the police that he had certain sensitive information about a couple of terrorists, who were hiding in the city and were planning to carry out attacks at some important installations here. The police took the information shared by Baral seriously. Baral was reportedly carrying an ID card in which his name and the central intelligence agency’s names were printed,” they added.
“Police failed to realise that an R&AW official will never reveal his identity to anyone. The police also took him along with them during drunken driving checks in the area. Some cops had also attended Baral’s wedding this year thinking he was a RAW official,” sources further said.
Khandagiri police station officials said the inspector-in-charge suspected that Baral was lying that he was a RAW official. “The Khandagiri police station inspector in-charge then informed the Bhubaneswar DCP about Baral. The DCP contacted his counterparts in Delhi to verify Baral’s claims and found that he was fraud. Baral later confessed to the cops that he wanted to impress his girlfriend by claiming that he was an intelligence agency official,” they added.
“We have recovered a Mahindra Bolero, one yellow flickering light, one Motorola VHF set, one air gun and a handcuff from Baral and Lakra,” the police said.
