Kendujhar: A 48-year-old man was killed in an elephant attack at Talarad huan village under the Bhuyan Juang Pirha Forest Range in Kendujhar district Saturday night, officials said.
The victim, identified as Narottam Juang, was returning home from work when he encountered the elephant near his village.
The animal reportedly grabbed him with its trunk and flung him to the ground, leaving him critically injured.
He was rushed to the Banspal Community Health Centre, where doctors declared him dead. Police conducted a post-mortem and handed over the body to his family members.
Forest Range Officer Nayan Kanta Sahu said the victim’s family would receive compensation in accordance with government norms.
He said forest officials were monitoring the elephant’s movement and alerting residents to avoid further incidents.
Officials said a herd of 12 elephants has been roaming the area for several days, triggering fear among villagers.
Narot Tam’s death is the second fatal elephant attack reported in the area within a week. Villagers have demanded immediate action by the Forest Department.
