Imphal: The Manipur government Sunday extended the ban on internet services throughout the state for the next five days till 3 pm, June 30 to avoid any activity that could impact the law and order situation. The ban extension was implemented a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired an all-party meeting discussing the situation in the state.
Meanwhile, the stand-off between a mob led by local women and the Army ended after the Army troops restricted themselves from any confrontation to avoid risk to civilian lives and left with seized weapons and ammunition, an official said.
The stand-off started after Army encircled Imphal East’s Itham village and its nearby area, where few members of Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), a local militant group were hiding.
The Union Home Minister Saturday while addressing the all-party meeting informed that the Prime Minister has been constantly monitoring the ongoing situation in Manipur, as per reports.
Shah further added that the situation in Manipur is returning back to normalcy and no civilian causality has been recorded since June 13 in the violence.
Congress however has slammed the Central and state government over handling the situation on ground to contain the violence in the north eastern state. Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Manipur Okram Ibobi Singh said that he told Amit Shah it was not the right time to politicise the issue as the state needs normalcy but he didn’t want to listen to him.
“When I started giving my suggestions, I think he did not want to listen. I also mentioned that this was not the time to politicise the issue as normalcy needs to be brought in the state. I asked him to give me at least 5 mins to speak on the issue but he asked me to meet him separately,” Singh informed.
