Malkangiri: After a brief hiatus, Maoists resumed violent activities Monday night, killing a tribal man and abducting another suspecting that the men were acting as police informers in Kudumuluguma area of this district, police said.
A group of 50 armed ultras stormed into Chandanpur village and targeted a camp, where residents of Andrapalli in the cut off area of Chitrakonda, were rehabilitated. The residents had fled Andrapalli due to naxal menace.
The Maoists abducted two men after threatening them. While the body of Rabi Pujari was found with throat slit on the outskirts of the village, the fate of Nanda Galori is not known yet, the police said.
Besides, the ultras also sprayed bullets on the house of Sadhu Hantala, the block unit president of BJD, in Pujariguda village.
Malkangiri superintendent of police (SP) Mitrabhanu Mohapatra said police personnel were sent to the site and the body of Pujari has been sent for post-mortem.
Irate villagers staged a blockade on Jeypore-Gobindpalli road for a while. The agitators said they had taken shelter at the camp after leaving their houses due to Maoist menace but the police failed to provide them protection. They demanded effective measures to ensure their safety.
According to reports, 28 families were rehabilitated in the village as they fled their ancestral homes fearing the rebels.
The ultras forcibly took Rabi after beating up his wife Sona Pujari. They took him to the house of Nanda Golari. There they tied Rabi to a tree and killed him by slitting his throat in the presence of his wife and two daughters.
Later, the rebels abducted Nanda and left the place. After committing the crime, they went to Pujariguda village and called Sadhu. However, Sadhu’s wife somehow sensed Maoists’ presence and didn’t open the door.
In desperation to kill the BJD leader, the guerillas sprayed bullets on his living room and fled. Many household items were destroyed in the indiscriminate firing, it was learnt.
Several families blocked the road demanding compensation for the kin of the deceased and immediate release of the abducted person.
They alleged neither police nor BSF men arrived at the place even as some people informed them about the arrival of Maoists in the village. PNN
