Today we are going to tell you about a tradition were both the bride and groom are blackened. Might sound weird but it is true! It is a Scottish pre-wedding tradition named ‘Blackening the bride and groom’.
It is performed in the days or weeks prior to marriages in rural areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
According to the tradition, the couple is tied to a chair while people pour all kinds of disgusting and foul substances starting from feathers, smelly sauces, rotten eggs, spoiled curry, curdled milk, boot polish, treacle, tar, soot, flour, cocoa powder or anything black and grungy.
The bride and groom are ‘captured’ by friends and family, covered in food, or a variety of other – preferably adhesive – substances, then paraded publicly for the community to see.
