Cuttack: The Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) department is constructing another sewage treatment plant (STP) for the Silver City at Mattagajpur with an allocation of Rs 50 crore.
The new project would treat sewage from households of the areas including Purighat, Khannagar, Mangalabag and Nuabazar.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had inaugurated a modern STP in CDA area of the city recently. The state government has availed loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for constructing the twin STPs, sources said.
Release of untreated sewage from the city to River Mahanadi and its distributary Kathajodi was causing pollution in these rivers, prompting the H&UD to construct the STPs.
“We would collect sewage from every household through underground sewerage lines and treat it at the STPs. The purified water would be released into Mahanadi and Kathajodi,” said an official of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC).
CMC sources said the H&UD department has engaged a Chennai-based company to construct the STP at Mattagajpur. “Construction work for the project, which can treat 1.5 crore litre of sewage daily, was started in 2014. The project would be ready for commissioning by April 2019,” JICA project director Basanta Kumar Parida said.
Mayor Meenakshee Behera said the STPs would help check water pollution in Mahanadi and Kathajodi rivers. “The two projects would bring a new lease of life for the 11 lakh residents of Cuttack,” she added.
