Bhubaneswar: In a gruesome incident, a 35-year-old woman, suspected to have been raped first, was found bludgeoned to death over some personal reason at Chirakhalotola area in the Infocity police limits here in the wee hours of Monday.
Infocity police recovered the woman’s body and sent it for autopsy. “On the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim’s brother, we have registered a case and initiated a probe,” Infocity inspector in-charge Banita Maharana said. “Prima facie, it’s a case of rape followed by murder. The exact details of the death would be known based on the post-mortem report.
Police suspect a youth, who frequently visited the woman, killed her after outraging her modesty. According to police investigations, the victim hailed from Chandbali area in Bhadrak, but was residing in a rented accommodation at the Chirakhalotola Slum near Prasanti Vihar under Infocity police limits here for the past three months.
According to the victim’s neighbours, she was working as a housekeeping employee at a private hospital here for the past five years. “A youth, who works with her at the hospital, frequently visited her, claiming that he’s her cousin. We noticed the youth entering her house Sunday afternoon and then there was a quarrel between them. At night, we heard the woman’s screams,” they said, adding they informed the police. Police reached the spot around 3am.
Police found the window-panes broken and the woman’s body lying in blood on the floor. “We suspect the assailant escaped through the window after raping and killing her. We recovered an iron rod, a pair of slippers etc,” cops said.
