Bhubaneswar: Nandanik, a Koraput-based theatre group, is organising mime workshops in different parts of the district beginning today. The workshops will conclude on November 25.
Mime artist of international repute Ranen Chakrabarty will be the key resource at the workshops and he will train school and college students of Koraput district in the art.
A theatre group for children, Children’s Theatre Wing, is also taking part in the workshops.
Ranen, who hails from Kolkata, has been teaching the art also to deaf mute students in Kolkata.
Nandanik secretary Saumendra Kumar Swain said: “It will be great opportunity for all mime artists of this area to learn from an experienced mime as Ranen. Children are very much excited to be part of this workshop.”
A student of Vikas Vidyalaya echoed Saumendra. “I watch mime performances on television and have always wondered how they are able to communicate with audiences solely through expressions. But now I will get to learn the art. I am very excited to be part of this workshop.”
Nandanik, which is organising the workshops, was founded in 2014 by Sourav Gupta, a professor at department of journalism and mass communication in Central University of Orissa. Sourav is also a playwright, actor and director. He has won the ‘Satya Bandyopadhyay’ award for best director for his play ‘Shabdgaon’.
The theatre group has so far been known for its street plays. It will be a new experience for the group as it conducts workshops to promote mime, which has a rich heritage worldwide.
The origin and development of mime may be traced to the onset of human civilization, and India, Rome, Greece and France have seen the art form being practiced from time immemorial.
