Phulbani: In a shocking incident, the condition of a minor patient turned critical after he was infused B+ blood instead of O+ due to the alleged carelessness of doctors, nurses and lab technicians of the blood bank at the district headquarters hospital here.
The sickle-cell anaemia patient Prabhant Nayak (11) of Tikabali in Kandhamal district was immediately shifted to Cuttack-based SCB Medical College and Hospital Friday.
Prabhat came to the hospital with his mother and submitted his medical documents. But a nurse on duty mentioned B+ blood instead of O + on the requisition paper, which should have been handed over to an attendant. Instead, the paper was sent though his mother.
The lab technician on the duty went through the requisition paper and infused blood of wrong group, which led to side effects minutes after infusion in the patient, leading him to a critical condition. The patient felt uneasy in breathing and suffocated.
The doctor and the nurse on duty hurriedly sent the patient to the Cuttack hospital.
Dr Banabashi Behera, who attended to Prabhat, admitted that the patient’s relative displayed papers mentioned O+ blood and the blood bank gave blood accordingly.
However, Dr Pradip Behera, who sent the patient to Cuttack, pleaded innocence about the alleged wrong infusion of blood.
Additional district medical officer Dr Mamata Patra said the matter will be investigated and all who were involved in his treatment will be bought under the ambit of probe.
It was alleged that immediately after the matter came to the fore, the lab technician came to the patient and took away the blood pouch, which creates suspicion.
However, the lab technician claimed that despite repeated tests, the patient’s blood sample tested B+. PNN
