Cuttack/Balasore: The Cuttack Child Welfare Committee Monday rescued an 11-year-old girl from the house of a sales tax officer and reunited her with her family members alleged that the minor was sold off by a woman for Rs 50,000.
Family members with the help of social activist from Balasore approached the CWC after which, the girl was rescued.
According to sources, the girl lived with her father and grandmother after being abandoned by her mother who eloped with another man. Taking advantage of their situation, a distant relative-Papiya Hashan convinced the girl’s grandmother that she would provide better living and education to the girl and brought her to Cuttack.
However, she engaged the girl to do household chores in her house. When the girl objected and expressed her desire to return back home, Papiya handed her over to another relative who also forced her to work as a maid.
After the girl objected, they sold her for Rs 50,000 to a sales tax officer. The girl was not allowed to contact her family members and made to work under extreme pressure.
After coming to know of the plight of their child, the victim’s grandmother and father sought the help of the social activist who approached the Balasore CWC and lodged a complaint in this connection.
Later, the Balasore CWC informed the Cuttack CWC officials who rescued the girl.
“The minor girl was rescued and we handed her over to her grandmother,” said the CWC officer.
