Minor girl scuttles bid to marry her off

Baripada: In a commendable act, a minor girl studying in a college reportedly scuttled an attempt by her maternal uncle to marry her off and lodged a complaint with the police against the illegal act Wednesday.

The incident took place in Rairangpur area in Mayurbhanj district. The girl also took the help of district child welfare committee and decided that she would pursue her higher studies.

The committee has arranged for her accommodation at one of her relative’s house in Patana area so that she can pursue Plus II in Science stream. The girl had secured 73 per cent in HSC examinations.

According to the girl, her mother stays at her uncle’s house. Her uncle serves in the Indian Navy in Vishakhapatnam. She alleged that her uncle had pretended to take care of her studies and secretly tried to marry her off with a young man. Initially, she was not aware of her uncle’s intension about her marriage.

When she came to know about it, she mustered courage and revealed the matter to one of her lecturers, who advised her to take up the matter with the police against her uncle. 

Patana IIC Ranju Hasini Kullu held talks with the officer of the district child protection committee about the matter.    PNN
