Baripada/Jashipur: In a ghastly incident, a pack of stray dogs mauled a seven-year-old schoolboy to death at Rahanda under Jashipur police limits in Mayurbhanj district Monday, the police said.
The victim was identified as Rinku Moharana, son of Sarama Moharana, of Balisudura village in Jamukeshwar panchayat under Jashipur police limits. He was a student of Class-I at a government upper primary (UP) school in Rahanda.
The incident has sparked shockwaves in the area with residents demanding strong measures to ward off the threat of stray dogs. A pall of gloom descended on the minor’s village after reports of his death surfaced.
The incident took place when Rinku was on his way to his school at 10 am via a paddy field when four stray dogs attacked him, the police said. Rinku ran to save himself but fell down after a few metres when the mongrels pounced on him and badly mauled him.
They were soon joined by two other stray dogs that ripped out the intestines out of the boy’s body. Some passersby heard the barking of the dogs and rushed to the spot but by then the minor was already died. They informed the police who rushed to the spot and seized the body.
The post-mortem examination was carried out at Karanjia Hospital and a case of unnatural death was registered, IIC of Jashipur police station, Parsuram Sahu, said.
Locals alleged stray dog menace has drastically increased in the area. Some eyewitnesses claimed that the situation worsened after a pack of stray dogs was brought in a van from Karanjia and released in the area.
