Sambalpur, March 3: Police Tuesday claimed to have cracked the rape and murder of a class VIII girl in Dhodachuan village under Bomaloi panchayat of Rengali block here and arrested one person in this connection. The accused was identified as Bhisma Ranabida (22) of Bhurusipali village under Rengali police limits.
With the arrest of the accused, Rengali police also seized a cycle, two mobile phones, torch light, a black jacket and other items from the crime spot.
A case was registered at Rengali police station under various sections of IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, additional superintendent of police Sushil Kumar Panigrahi told media
persons here.
Elaborating on the sequence of events, Panigrahi said the incident occurred when the 15-year-old girl had gone with another girl to a brick kiln factory in Budbudia forest to receive her daily wage Friday. When they were returning through a forest road, the accused attacked the two girls.
The other girl managed to escape the attack. However, the accused strangulated the 15-year-old girl to death after raping her and fled the spot, he added.
After the girl’s father lodged a complaint at Rengali police station, police registered a case and started an investigation. The cycle seized from the crime spot helped
investigators in cracking the crime, he said. The ASP also said that
the accused admitted to have
committed the crime.
The accused also told investigators that he raped a woman in April 2014 when she was sleeping in her house, he added.
The latest incident sparked widespread protests, with thousands of people from Dhodachuan and nearby villages staging a demonstration near Rengali police station demanding compensation to the victim’s
family and arrest of the accused.
