Puri: Several cases of mismanagement were reported on the first day of Kartik Brata Sunday from the shelter houses set up by the government for Habashyalis.
A short-circuit occurred at a temporary shelter on the premises of Bagala Dharmashala that houses at least 350 elderly women. Fire brigade personnel doused the fire. Many women also faced problems due to water shortage in morning. However, the problem was solved by district administration officials.
Contrary to the claims of district administration, no ambulance was present when an elderly woman fell ill at a shelter house in Narendrakona area. A PCR van took the woman to the district headquarters hospital.
At least 15 elderly women, who arrived in the city to register for the free accommodation and food scheme, faced problems due to lack of space in the three shelter houses. Social activists blamed the district administration and civic body for the inconvenience.
“The district administration was supposed to construct four shelter houses for the women. However, it set up only three. Consequently, some women, who arrived in the city Sunday, could not get benefit of the government scheme,” said a social activist.
A civic body official said a new shelter house to accommodate more devout women is being constructed and it will be functional from October 17.
