Bhubaneswar/Puri: Spotted deer of Balukhand sanctuary in Puri district — that were nowhere to be seen after extremely severe cyclonic storm ‘Fani’ hit the district — have meanwhile returned to their habitat, sources in Forest department said.
It is believed that some of the animals, birds and fishes are blessed with a unique capability to sense approaching earthquake or cyclone like calamities well ahead of human beings. They also know how to protect themselves under such adverse conditions. This belief was reaffirmed when about 4000 spotted deer, the main attraction of Balukhand sanctuary, reappeared in their habitat after going missing since the cyclone.
Their disappearance not only shocked the animal lovers but also left the Forest department a worried lot. The Department, however, was reasonably sure that nothing bad had happened to these creatures as not a single carcass was spotted during a search operation carried out by them after the cyclone.
To trace the animals, a team had been formed but the search operation yielded no result.
The department then resorted to using drone cameras, and it worked. The deer were spotted grazing on meadows.
“While some of the deer have already returned to their natural habitat, the others are returning,” a source in the Forest department said.
