Mohapatra, Sonal sworn in as RS members

New Delhi: Newly nominated Rajya Sabha members Raghunath Mohapatra and Sonal Mansingh Wednesday took oath as members of the Upper House.
The President had recently approved the names of well known Odisha-based sculptor Raghunath Mohapatra and New Delhi-based Odissi dancer Sonal Mansingh as nominated members of the Rajya Sabha.
Mohapatra Wednesday wore a traditional kurta, dhoti and took the oath in Odia in front of the Chairman and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu. The Vice President congratulated him and shook hands later. After taking oath, Mohapatra reiterated his commitment to work for constructing a replica of the Konark Temple in Odisha and said that he would strive to protect Odisha’s interests.
Sonal Mansingh took the oath in Hindi and wore a saree to the Upper House on her maiden day. She was also congratulated by her new colleagues and the Chairman of the Upper House.
As per rules the President can nominate to the Rajya Sabha 12 persons having special knowledge or practical experience in literature, science, art and social service under Article 80 of the Constitution.
