Kendrapara: A policeman here hogged the limelight again for the wrong reasons when a mother of two lodged a complaint against him for allegedly outraging her modesty while she had been to the police station to get justice.
According to SP Dayanidhi Gochhait, Mitani Nayak (28) (name changed), the woman of Ichhapur village under Pattamundai police station lodged an FIR, stating that her husband Yudhistir Nayak worked as a plumbing supervisor in Dubai. She was tortured by her brother-in-law Golekh Nayak forcing her to approach Pattamundai police May 20 to get justice.
However, she was allegedly misbehaved with by Ramesh Chandra Mukhi, who was the IIC of Pattamundai police station and now officiates at the district police headquarters. The police officer proposed to marry her and when she refused, he outraged her modesty. He also asked her to come to his quarter alone the next day, the FIR alleged.
“When I reached Pattamundai police station, IIC Mukhi asked me to come to his chamber. As a result, I along with two girls entered his chamber. Mukhi offered me a chair and asked the girls to wait outside. He locked the office door from inside. Later, he quizzed me about the allegations and proposed to marry me on the day of Sabitri Brata. He said if I agree to his proposal he would put my brother-in-law behind bar. When I refused and made an attempt to come out of his chamber, Mukhi held me from behind and kissed my lips. However, I managed to escape from the room by pushing him,” Mitan said in her complaint.
Mukhi May 21 allegedly called her from a mobile no 7205321233 and asked her to come to his quarter alone. When she asked to go with her father, he said ‘no’. The Inspector did not accept her FIR when she reached his office at 5 pm with her parents, Mitani alleged.
Mukhi allegedly attempted to give her Rs2 lakh to not disclose the matter. He even threatened me with dire consequences if I disclose the matter before his higher ups and to media, she said. “After consulting with my husband, I filed a complaint Friday before the SP demanding action against Mukhi. If justice is denied to me, I would knock the doors of the State Women’s Commission and if I still do not get justice I will commit suicide in front of the SP office,” she said.
When contacted, Dayanidhi Gochhait said a case bearing case no-174/17 dated 16-6-17 under Section 342, 354 (a) of IPC has been registered in this regard. He has directed DSP Satya Narayan Das to conduct an inquiry. If the allegations are established, departmental and criminal proceedings would be initiated against the accused.
Efforts to contact Mukhi for this story were not successful as he was on leave. Notably, Mukhi had been placed under suspension when he was the officer in-charge of Mahakalapada police station in 2006 for dereliction of duty. PNN
