Berhampur: Police Wednesday caught a most-wanted criminal after a brief exchange of fire which left a sub-inspector injured. The accused was identified as Pintu Sahu of Karapali village under Gopalpur police limits in Ganjam district.
Meanwhile, Pintu also sustained bullet injuries and was admitted to Berhampur-based MKCG Medical College and Hospital where his condition is stable after treatment. He has 10 cases of murder, 10 murder attempts along with extortion, police said.
He was in the most-wanted list of police. However he always managed to slip away from police clutches.
Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted him near Lanjipali by-pass while he was on his way to his village on a motorbike. Pintu fired at the police and tried to escape. However, he fell down after a bullet struck his thighs.
On the other hand, Baidyanathpur police SI Dipti Ranjan Pradhan was also hurt in the process. A pistol, a bomb and a motorbike were seized from his possession. It may be noted here that at least 24 criminals including Pintu have been held so far by Ganjam police in last one year.
On the other hand, four of the criminals were handicapped in their legs after they were engaged by police in encounters. PNN
