Pattamundai: A long-running land dispute escalated into a brutal acid attack in Bachhara village under Pattamundai Adarsha police station limits Monday evening, leaving a mother and her son seriously injured, police said Tuesday.
The victims, identified as Rabindra Sahu and his mother, sustained severe injuries after acid was allegedly thrown on them by a neighbour, Vijay Sahu, following an old rivalry over land ownership. Both were initially rushed to the Pattamundai sub-divisional hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where they are undergoing treatment.
Police registered a case (16/2026) in connection with the incident and arrested the accused. He was later produced before a local court, said Pattamundai Adarsha police station IIC Bandana Patra.

According to police, Rabindra Sahu and Vijay Sahu had been involved in a prolonged dispute over land, with earlier incidents already under investigation at the police station. The tension reportedly took a violent turn Monday when Vijay Sahu allegedly attacked Rabindra and his mother while Rabindra was engaged in household work. The accused is said to have worn gloves while carrying out the attack.
Following a complaint, police detained the accused and intensified the investigation. A scientific team visited the spot to conduct a forensic examination Tuesday. During the investigation, police seized three bottles of acid, a sharp weapon and the gloves allegedly used during the attack. Further investigation is underway.
