When did you decide to be a singer?

I am not a trained singer. But when I was a kid, I used to listen to my mother’s Malayali songs which my father would capture in a little tape recorder. I started humming those songs and also songs of Kishore Da. In fact, the musical environment at my home enhanced my affection for music. These culminated in my decision to be a singer.

In your opinion, what is the definition of a song?

Lyrics are the most important component of a song. This is because it connects you to the singer. Thankfully, the songs in which I was involved in had meaningful lyrics.

Your albums Pal (1999) and Humsafar (2008) have a long gap between them. Why?

Actually, I am very slow (He chuckles). I give more time to my stage performances, studio recordings and family. So, in between, I don’t get time for my own music. I believe in a balanced life.

Are a creating a new album currently?

I am trying any way. I will do my best to create something this year. It may not be a complete album. However, a couple of songs might come up.

Is it true that you worked as a salesman for six years?

Yes, but I was a bad salesman. I wonder how a salesman sells a product. But, later, I realized my ability and decided to quit the job and pursue my dream.

Share your experience working with legendary musician AR Rahman?

It was a nice experience to work with him. We used to sit together to compose a song.

Elucidate the contrast between working with a senior musician and a junior one like Amaal Malik?

I didn’t find any differences. All of them have passion for music. But in the present day, the approach is more casual and friendly than before.

Your opinion on your performance in the city being theme-based (friendship)…

Yes. Life without friends is lonely. They also play a key role in pushing you ahead. McDowell’s No.1 Soda’s initiative to promote friendship is commendable. I loved performing for the friendship. I performed songs of my album Pal dedicating to friendship.

Do you think #METOO campaign has taken the Bollywood industry by surprise?

Apparently, there are two sides of the industry. When a wave comes, it exposes everything. This campaign can cleanse the system. I believe every stakeholders of Hindi film fraternity should concentrate on their work and avoid such behaviour.
