Nabarangpur: District Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivekanand Sharma has been accused of torturing and thrashing a cable operator at the official’s residence.
Levelling the allegations against the police officer, Congress leader and former MP Pradip Majhi demanded Sharma’s suspension and a probe into the incident.
Majhi also demanded action against Nabarangpur Inspector in Charge (IIC), who he accused of being allegedly involved in the attack. The MP threatened to call a bandh in the district December 4 if no steps were taken in this regard.
Meanwhile, DGP RP Sharma Monday directed the Range DIG to probe and report on the alleged assault.
According to reports, the cable operator namely Babula Bhatra had gone to the SP’s house for installing a TATA sky cable connection November 23. While working near an almirah, Babula was questioned by Sharma, following which the latter allegedly thrashed him for not recognizing him and did not pay respect by folding hands to the officer.
Later, when he came out of the quarter, Sharma offered some money, a pair of new pant and shirt and asked him not to disclose the matter to anybody, the complainant said.
It was not to end there, the IIC allegedly took him to different places in the name of police custody since the past three days.
Majhi has also released an audio tape featuring conversation between the victim and Papadahandi police station Officer-in-charge Tarique Ahmed, in which the cop is allegedly trying to pressurize Babula to withdraw the case.
The Congress leader has threatened to observe bandh in the district unless the SP apologises for his act by December 4. However, Sharma has refuted the charges levelled against him terming those as baseless.
On the other hand, DGP RP Sharma has directed the concerned DIG to initiate a probe into the matter and submit a report.
The SP was earlier in the news for wrong reasons for allegedly torturing two orderlies engaged at his residence.
