Bhubaneswar, Jan 12: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Monday urged Union agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh to set up a ‘National Kamadhenu Breeding Centre’ in the state to enhance the productivity of milch animals’.
In his letter to the Union minister, the Chief Minister said, “Establishment of the National Kamadhenu Breeding Centre (NKBC) will have an impact on conservation, preservation and development of indigenous bovine breeds in the country.”
The letter also mentioned, “Apart from upgrading genetic merit of indigenous bovine breeds, it will also enhance production and productivity of milch animals.” Out of 1.3 crore indigenous bovine population of Orissa, four indigenous cattle breeds – Binjharpuri, Ghumusari, Khariar and Motu- and two indigenous buffalo breeds – Chilika and Kalanhandi – were identified as registered breeds by Government of India. This was due to their unique traits which are not found in other breeds, said the letter.
Taking the bovine population into consideration, the establishment of NKBC will definitely boost the milk production in the state and provide livelihood support to a large number of dairy farmers.
Stating that the state government is willing to provide all kinds of support in this regard, Naveen said, “My government is willing to provide requisite support to the Centre as requested in the DO letter of December 22, 2014 and looking for your support.”
