Kolkata: Mohun Bagan returned to winning ways under their new coach Shankarlal Chakraborty as the Kolkata giants defeated Aizwal FC 2-0 in an I-League encounter here Sunday at the Salt Lake Stadium, thus ending their four-match winless streak.
A self-goal by Aizwal defender Masih Saighani helped Mohun Bagan take the lead in the 53rd minute, while Aser Dipanda Dicka (75th) doubled the tally for the Mariners.
Both teams missed quite a few chances in the first half. Aizwal could have taken the lead in the 14th minute had Kareem Omolaja’s thunderous shot from a long range not hit the woodwork.
The home team had their best chance in the 38th minute but Shylo Mama denied them with a brilliant goalline save. The score would have been different if not Dicka and Ansumana Kromah missed open nets on a couple of occasions also.
However, the deadlock was finally broken when Saighani outstretched his leg to deny Dicka a finish on the cross but ended up tapping the ball into his own goal giving the green and maroon fans relief.
Dicka got the second goal as he made the best use of a long ball rounding an advancing Aizawl goalkeeper Avilash Paul before slotting it home with his left foot.
The win pushed Mohun Bagan to fourth position with 13 points from eight matches, while Aizawl remain at sixth with 10 points from six games.
