Rairangpur: A newborn girl was rescued from a forest area near Damouda village under Gorumahisani police station limits in Mayurbhanj district Friday after villagers heard the abandoned child’s cries.
Locals alerted the police after noticing the infant lying near the forest edge. Police reached the spot promptly and rescued the baby, who was initially admitted to Gorumahisani Community Health Centre.
After a preliminary medical examination, doctors referred the infant to Rairangpur Sub-Divisional Hospital for further care.

Officials of the Women and Child Development department were informed about the incident.
An Anganwadi worker has been deployed at the hospital to look after the child.
According to Child Development Project Officer Kaili Mani Tudu, the newborn is currently under medical supervision and receiving necessary care.
Police have launched an investigation to trace those responsible for abandoning the infant.
