Balangir: A joint team of the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) and the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has rescued a baby girl after she was allegedly handed over to another family by a nurse at a private hospital in Balangir, raising suspicion of child trafficking.
The baby has been admitted to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital. The role of the nurse is under suspicion and police are expected to investigate the case.
According to sources, a woman from the Patna garh area gave birth to the girl at a private hospital in Balangir October 4. The woman already had three daughters.
A nurse at the hospital reportedly took the newborn from the mother, saying she would raise the child. The nurse later handed the baby over to another family. The matter came to light when the nurse allegedly sought to take the baby back from that family.
Acting on the information, DCPU officials and a CWC team lodged a written complaint at Balangir Town police station and rescued the child from Kansaripada.
