Dhenkanal: Tension prevailed at the district headquarters hospital here after a newborn died alleged allegedly due to medical negligence Saturday.
Doctors reportedly refused to shift the newborn to a Cuttack hospital despite its condition deteriorating with each passing hour. This happened despite the family members of the newborn fervently pleading before the doctors to shift the baby.
The incident sparked outrage in the hospital as the father of the baby Kuna Behera in the absence of the chief district medical officer (CDMO) submitted a written complaint to ADMO (Medical) Dr Sujata Rani Mishra demanding stringent action against doctors and nurses responsible for his child’s death.
ADMO Mishra admitted to have received the complaint but said she will submit it to the CDMO for action at his end after he joins office.
Sources said Kuna’s wife Mamata Behera of Khateibereni village under tribal-dominated Kankadahada block in this district delivered the baby boy at Kamakhyanagar sub-divisional hospital July 7 night.
However, the baby’s condition turned critical after delivery following which doctors immediately shifted it to the district headquarters hospital while advising the couple to take it to Cuttack for better treatment.
The couple admitted the baby in the paediatric ward the same night and fervently pleaded with the nurses and doctors to shift the baby to Cuttack. However, a nurse hurled abuses at them, the couple alleged.
The newborn was found still at 6 am following which Kuna called a staff nurse to conduct a check-up of the baby.
A nurse conducted a check-up and pronounced the baby dead. Kuna again ran to the doctors at the outdoor ward and pleaded with them to check the baby’s condition, but to no avail.
