Bhubaneswar, April 9: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Angul superintendent of police (SP) to submit an action-taken report within four weeks in connection with the alleged inaction of police that resulted in the killing of Samuel Bodra by Maoists February 13.
The order came after Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain filed a petition (2010/18/16/2015) with the rights panel.
Samuel, a resident of Pattamunda of Pallahara block, was killed by the Maoists who believed he was a police informer. The killing was a result of the inaction of the local police and public authority, the petitioner pleaded, saying that this is a violation of human rights. A case (No.8/2015) was filed with Pallahara police but no action was taken in this regard, Swain said. She urged the commission to take immediate action against the erring authorities to prevent similar incidents from taking place in future.
Swain also sought compensation of `25 lakh for the kin of the deceased.
In another case, the NHRC has asked the Angul SP to submit an action-taken report within four weeks in connection with a suicide by a school student February 12 following corporal punishment. According to the complaint (2007/18/16/2015) filed by Swain, the student, Rajanandini Maharana of Laxmimarket area, had committed suicide by using her school uniform after she was subjected to punishment by Kamala Kant Sahu, the high school teacher. A police case (No. 83/2015) was also lodged.
Swain urged the commission to direct action against the public authority and also to award compensation of `20 lakh to the kin of the deceased.
