Bonai: A student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, was killed while a girl student riding pillion sustained critical injuries after a speeding dumper coming on the wrong side hit their scooter from the front at Samardari Chhak on National Highway-143 under Lahunipada police limits in Sundargarh district Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Kartikeyan Senthil Krishnan, 19, a second-year student of Electronics and Telecommunication. The critically injured girl was identified as Basanti Kartik Narayan, 19, a second-year student of Biotech. Both are natives of Tamil Nadu.
Six girl students and 10 boy students from NIT, Rourkela, were on their way to Khandadhar waterfall on rented scooters. Near Samardari Chhak on National Highway-143, a dumper bearing registration number OD 14 AH-2215, coming on the wrong side, hit a scooter. The rider, Kartikeyan, died on the spot, while Basanti sustained critical injuries.
Police shifted the critically injured girl by ambulance to Lahunipada hospital and later shifted her to Rourkela. Police seized the dumper and the scooter from the spot and launched an investigation. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
